Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease caused by the filarial worm Onchocerca volvulus, transmitted through the bite of infected blackflies. It is prevalent in Nigeria, particularly near rivers, leading to severe skin and eye complications that can result in permanent blindness if not treated promptly.

Causes

  • Poor access to clean water sources

Symptoms

  • Severe itching
  • Skin rashes and lesions
  • Vision problems including inflammation and blindness

Prevention

  • Avoid areas with high blackfly populations near rivers
  • Use insect repellents and wear protective clothing
  • Participate in community treatments with ivermectin when available

Treatment

  • Seek professional medical care for proper diagnosis
  • Receive ivermectin treatment as prescribed by a healthcare provider
